Allergy or intolerance? Let's clarify!
Have you ever wondered if your child has a food allergy, or maybe an intolerance? You are not alone! Many parents struggle with the difference, but knowing this can help you better care for your little one. Let's explore the differences together discover and how you can proactively prevent allergies.
What is a food allergy?
A food allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to a harmless food, such as milk or peanuts. The body mistakenly sees this as a threat. This can lead to symptoms such as:
- Itching or rash,
- Swelling of lips or face,
- Breathing problems,
- In severe cases: anaphylaxis (a life-threatening reaction).
The culprits? IgE antibodies that release substances such as histamine, which causes allergic symptoms. In severe reactions, an EpiPen is a lifesaver.
In the Netherlands, milk, egg, peanuts and nuts are among the most common allergens in babies. Fortunately, as a parent you can play an important role in reducing the chance of food allergies.
Did you know: Research shows that introducing allergens like peanuts and eggs early can reduce the risk of allergies by up to 80%? This is confirmed by the Nutrition Center and the Dutch Association for Pediatrics.¹
What is a food intolerance?
A food intolerance is very different. Here the immune system does not react, but your digestion has difficulty with certain nutrients. Think of lactose intolerance: your body lacks the enzyme lactase, which is needed to break down lactose (milk sugar).
- Typical symptoms include:
- Stomach ache or cramps,
- Flatulence or diarrhea,
- Nausea .
The good news? Intolerances are uncomfortable, but not dangerous, and often manageable with dietary changes.²
